President of the Spanish Club.
Editor of the yearbook.
Those titles sound good on the surface. But they don’t tell colleges the whole story. If your activities are an iceberg, the title is just the tip. What’s beneath the surface determines the strength.
What happened after you founded the non-profit? Who did you help? What difference did you make in their lives? How many people did you impact? Without that information, colleges only see the tip without the story underneath.
Every high school Spanish Club has a president. What was your story? What did you do in the role? How did you make things better or different for the members? What worked and what didn’t? What did you learn from it? Every student who did the job can claim the title’s tip. But the story beneath the surface is your opportunity to stand out.
Colleges know what the editor of a high school yearbook does. Is there a story beneath that surface? What did your success look like? What challenges did you face? How did your efforts make the experience and the final product better for everyone involved?
What story are you creating with the time you’re spending? What are you doing, learning, or contributing to build a foundation underneath the tips of your titles?
The stronger your foundation beneath the surface, the better your chances of admission to college.
