There Is No Magic Formula: What Colleges Actually Look For

"He doesn't have enough leadership on his resume, so we'll have him start a nonprofit this fall. Will that look good?"

We hear versions of that question every week from families navigating the college admissions process. You're hearing what other parents are doing. You're joining Facebook groups. You're trying to find the magic formula that will crack the code. Here's what nobody's telling you: there is no magic formula.

If every applicant has the same leadership, community service, and strong grades, if everyone does all the same things, then everyone looks exactly the same. Following that formula doesn't help students stand out. It makes them blend in.

Here's what colleges actually want: students who are authentic and distinct. Not manufactured. Not checking boxes. We've worked with students who wrote about "Sunday Surf Sessions." Others who played in a 70s rock cover band with their dad. Others who wrote about loving their job at "The Snack Shack." They stood out by being genuinely themselves and showing commitment, growth, and impact over time.

Join me, and I’ll help you understand what's really happening in college admissions and what actually works. You'll stop chasing non-existent formulas. You'll start to see that your students' authentic interests are their biggest advantages. You'll learn what colleges are actually looking for when they build a class. And you'll leave with a strategic plan grounded in how this process actually works, not in myths, rumors, or manufactured achievements.
