Ideas for Your Next Meeting with Your School Counselor

Not sure what questions to ask your high school counselor to get the help you need in your college application process? These 8 ideas will help you get the information you need for success.

If you read my last blog post, you already know how important it is to connect with your high school counselor. But what should you talk about in those meetings? Here are eight ideas for your next meeting with your high school counselor:

1. Share a story or anecdote about your favorite class, assignment or teacher.
What do you love about the class, what you are learning, and how you are engaging with the material outside the classroom?

2. Looking for ways do more?
Ask for advice and feedback about how you can engage in what you love both at school and in the local community. Remember, your school counselor usually has the inside scoop!

3. How are you feeling about high school and the transition to college?
If you are struggling or feeling overwhelmed, be open and honest and remember that you aren’t alone. Ask all the questions that you need answers to.

4. If you just visited colleges over spring break, have some strong opinions, and you need a place to process the feelings and get additional college suggestions, talk to your school counselor and listen to his or her ideas.

5. Do you receive accommodations?
If so, your school counselor can communicate that information to your teachers; unfortunately, they might be waiting for you to ask/advocate for yourself. Talk to your school counselor if you experience ANY pushback here.

6. Do you understand how to choose the right high school classes and what your academic plan will be over the course of your high school career?
If not, ask! You are your best advocate.

7. If you’re feeling uneasy about your testing timeline and not sure why all your friends have started test prep and you haven’t, talk to your school counselor!
She can give you tips about where to look for test prep (and how to prep on your own).

8. How are things going for you socially?
Remember, your high school experience isn’t just about academics—it’s also about having a healthy social life. School counselors are there to help you navigate both.

You don’t have to navigate high school or the college admissions process alone. Your high school counselor is a great person to have in your corner. Remember, they’re incredibly busy, but if you’re respectful of their time and schedule meetings well in advance, you’re likely to learn a lot from them!
