Qualified, But Not Competitive: The Key Factors Required for Highly Selective Admissions
Hi, I'm Matt Doyle, a former admissions officer at Hamilton College and a college counselor at Collegewise. I'm hosting a free live session on something most families learn too late: at highly selective colleges, top grades and test scores are now a basic requirement—they are not what gets a student accepted.
When top universities review thousands of high-achieving applicants, strong academics only move those applications into the evaluation pile. Once that basic threshold is met, admissions officers make final acceptance decisions based on other key factors, like leadership depth, essay framing, and recommendation context. Join us to learn how colleges actually make these decisions so your family can make the strategic choices necessary to excel in this process.
In this webinar, you will learn:
Qualified vs. Competitive: What admissions officers look for after a student meets the basic academic criteria to be evaluated.
Activity Depth Over Breadth: Why joining every club doesn't work—and how students can show real impact in a few key areas instead.
Clear Essay Strategy: How students can craft personal essays that show authentic voice and avoid common writing mistakes.
Inside Committee Review: How behind-the-scenes college priorities shape who gets accepted.
A Clear Application Roadmap: How Collegewise helps families connect every part of the application into one strong, clear story.
